Bruce Willis’s awful, 1991 vanity piece is an abuse of audience goodwill and a waste of a good cast and director (Michael Lehmann of Heathers). The story, cowritten by Willis, concerns a cat burglar pressured into stealing precious art, including some from the Vatican. But the script is just a convenience upon which Willis piles his vaguly boorish brand of hip irony, assuming his audience will stay with him every step of the way. Certain, self-congratulatory scenes induce cringing–Willis and Danny Aiello, for instance, sing “Side by Side” (to brassy accompaniment on the soundtrack) every time they’re working a job–but the overall effect is more irritating and baffling. Keep a good thought for Willis (an underrated actor better than the summer junk we usually see him in) by checking out his superior work in Pulp Fiction and his small but memorable role in Billy Bathgate. –Tom Keogh

A contemporary Jamaican fable with a remarkable, out-of-nowhere hero, Countryman is the story of a Rastafarian fisherman, Countryman (credited to “Himself”), who rescus a marijuana-smuggling, American couple from an airplane crash. The good deed doesn’t end there, however. An ambitious and power-hungry, emerging despot, Colonel Sinclair (Basil Keane), hypes the significance of the crash to impress political leaders, maintaining the smugglers are, in fact, enemy agents plotting against the government. Thus Countryman’s new friends are in great danger, and he keeps them out of harm’s way between smoking spliffs and putting up a preternaturally agile fight against Sinclair’s weapons-wielding thugs. The film exudes an infectious, contact-high energy, and Countryman’s gravity-defying stunts should please fans of similarly spectacular martial-arts movies such as Hero. The soundtrack to this 1982 movie features some of the greats of Jamaican reggae, including Bob Marley, Toots and the Maytals, and Steel Pulse. –Tom Keogh

This rousing basketball drama centers around Tommy “Shep” Sheppard (Leon), a former high school basketball star now haunted by the accidental death of his best friend, and Kyle Watson (Duane Martin), an arrogant high school player in danger of slipping into crime. Though Shep avoids commitment in his life as a security guard, his attraction to Kyle’s mother (Tonya Pinkins) draws him out of his protective shell–but Kyle is more interested in mentorship from Shep’s gangster brother Birdie (Tupac Shakur). Above the Rim is melodramatic but played with grit and energy by a solid cast, particularly Shakur. Writer-director Jeff Pollack keeps the story moving and gives the characters enough spin to rescu them from being cliches; the result is engaging despite its formulas. Also featuring Bernie Mac and Marlon Wayans. –Bret Fetzer
Tyrin Turner may not have broken out into stardom as was initially expected, but his work in Menace II Society is one of the more powerful cinematic debuts. The film, from the brother writer-director team of Allen and Albert Hughes, chronicles life in the Los Angeles ‘hood. Similar territory was covered in the equally commanding Boyz N the Hood, but what makes this cautionary tale stand out is not only the Hughes brothers’ forceful story, (written with their friend, Tyger Williams) and direction, but the naturalness of then-newcomer leads Turner as Caine, Larenz Tate as O-Dog, and Jada Pinkett as Ronnie. They are so credible–occasionally frighteningly so–that the repressive universe of violent ghetto life is captured effectively. Life as portrayed here–and no doubt accurately so–is both figuratively and literally narrow. As a very young boy, Caine witnesses his dad murdered over something inconsequntial, and his mom OD. His is a world where respect comes from intimidation, power from violence. Despite his understanding of right and wrong (valus passed on by a good friend, his kind grandparents, a caring teacher), his life and its entrapments are too much to overcome. –N.F. Mendoza

It’s hard to describe the hypnotic authority of director and actor Takeshi Kitano. In his first American venture, Brother, Kitano plays a yakuza who’s been exiled from Japan after the death of his boss. In Los Angeles, he discovers that his half-brother has become a small-time hood. Kitano quickly takes over, casually setting in motion gang wars and killing sprees. But a basketball game gets as much emphasis as an assassination; Kitano’s camera watches a dead body lit up by the flash of gunshots, completely ignoring the shootout that’s causing the light. Yet his movies don’t seem arty, just efficient–and effective: you may not know whether to laugh or flinch, but you will not stop watching. As an actor, Kitano slouches, twitches, and stares blankly–but you won’t stop watching him either. Bravery, commitment to friendship, and personal sacrifice empower the weak and give rise to unlikely heroes in the magical world of Fairytopia. Elina (played by Barbie) is a wingless fairy who is mercilessly teased by a trio of spiteful fairies. Luckily for Elina, Dandelion (a fellow fairy) and Bibble (a cute little puffball) are good, supportive friends. When the evil Laverna plots to take over Fairytopia and spreads a potion that causes an epidemic of flying sickness in Fairytopia, Elina is the only fairy not overcome with the illness. It’s up to Elina, Bibble, and new friend Hu to find a way to defeat Laverna and save Fairytopia from ruin. While the brightly colored animation of Fairytopia is enticing and the messages of friendship and sacrifice wholesome, the story line and characters are shallow and predictable. Worse yet, the colloquial dialogu and prepubescent attitude of many of the characters is downright annoying. While young Barbie fans will doubtless enjoy Fairytopia, Barbie Princess and the Pauper, Barbie Nutcracker, and Barbie Swan Lake offer richer story lines with better developed and more likeable characters. On a technical note, the DVD played fine on three test DVD players (Sony and Panasonic). (Ages 3 to 9) –Tami Horiuchi
